KST (Know Sure Thing) — what it is and how to use it in trading

Definition

KST (Know Sure Thing) is a momentum oscillator combining four smoothed rate-of-change readings over different periods into a single weighted sum, to capture several move horizons at once.

How it works in the builder

The kst operand takes eight parameters: roc1-roc4 (the rate-of-change lookback periods) and window1-window4 (the smoothing period for each), defaulting to 10/15/20/30 and 10/10/10/15 respectively. The longer ROC periods carry more weight in the sum.

What it looks like on the chart

Drawn as a separate panel, a smooth line oscillating around zero — thanks to combining four periods it is noticeably smoother than a single ROC or TRIX.

Typical use

A zero-line crossover is read as a shift in medium-term momentum that blends signals across several periods at once. Typical condition: kst crossed_above 0 to confirm a broad trend shift.

Common pitfalls

Eight parameters make KST noticeably harder to tune and read intuitively than single-period oscillators, and blending four horizons means the signal confirms later than any individual ROC component would on its own.
