Bat Pattern — what it is and how to use it in trading

Definition

The Bat pattern is a harmonic XABCD figure similar to the Gartley, but with a deeper point D relative to the starting point X. The name comes from the figure's characteristic shape, resembling a bat's silhouette.

How it works in the builder

Computed the same way as a Gartley — bat_bullish/bat_bearish with left/right/tolerance parameters — but against a different set of reference Fibonacci ratios between points X-A-B-C-D, which places point D deeper.

What it looks like on the chart

Visually the figure is almost indistinguishable from a Gartley in overall shape — the difference only shows up in the levels where point D sits relative to X-A.

Typical use

Like a Gartley, it's used as an entry zone at point D against the direction of the last leg. It is often combined with another harmonic pattern or a divergence as a filter, since the shape alone says nothing about the strength of the move that follows.

Common pitfalls

Bat and Gartley use overlapping ratio ranges — with a wide tolerance the same section of a chart can qualify as both a Bat and a Gartley at once. That isn't a builder bug, it's a consequence of how close the underlying ratios really are.
